"It seems to me that the pathway into such a reconciliation, rather unsurprisingly, involves science- the most direct object-oriented praxis that we have at our disposal. It also seems that both Deleuzo-Guattarian vitalists and speculative realists gesture in precisely this direction, with similar ideological aims but with different perceived ideological results. For both Deleuze/Guattari and Meillassoux, what is at stake are the gains of materialism made by the Enlightenment thinkers. Is there really no way that we can retain D&G’s and Latour’s mindfulness of the burden of desire (and its effects on even our best attempts at a pure metaphysics) as it weighs upon our efforts to enact the Copernican counter-revolution? Couldn’t a deeper foray into the ontic draw upon the radically depoliticized Deleuzo-Guattarian metaphysical vocabulary as a means of avoiding the twin traps of absolutism and correlationism?"

SBA & ANODYNE, thanks for initiating this discussion! BUT, what a fucking hassle signing up for a Google ID just to make this comment!
NEGOTIATIONS translator Martin Joughin notes how "'assemblage', which various translators have adopted for AGENCEMENT, conveys neither the sense of preparation or orientation toward action nor that of reconfiguration" of Deleuze's term ("Breaking Things Open, Breaking Words Open", note 9). So assemblages could be various non-conscious circulatory systems (such as aqua vitae 'finding its way' through the Earth's veins, or lava 'pressing' upward towards the volcanic vent ;) Deleuze, Joughin also tells us, likes the more neutral English term 'arrangement'. There is something vital about D&G's distinction between 'mechanics' and 'machinics'. But this would be more of an anthropomorphism, which is very distinct from anthropocentrism..
Is there a sense in which non-living assemblages or AGENCEMENTS can be described as semiotically participating in arranging their environment? Peter Sloterdijk, currently speaking at Harvard with Bruno Latour, speaks of us (and NOT just humans) as being "pets" in a "human zoo" which is, in turn, being shaped by non-human forces: emergent bubbles, globes, and foams.
If a "pathway into ... a metaphysics of partial perspectives" is to be found in a reconciliation with science, then it seems that a key concept for vitalistic as well as eliminativist Speculative Realisms, is ANTICIPATORY SYSTEMS, initially formulated back in the 1950s by biophysicist Robert Rosen (formerly available for free online but now republished ;(
Also, see Mihai Nadin "On Anticipatory Systems" at http://www.acm.org/ubiquity/interviews/v5i42_nadim.html, talking about "hybrid control systems" (he preaches that "The holy church of Saint Cause-and-Effect is as dogmatic as any church" ;) The CASYS'09 9th International Conference on Computing Anticipatory Systems is coming up this August, in Liege, Belgium (organized by CHAOS: Centre for Hyperincursion and Anticipation in Ordered Systems ;)
Daniel M Dubois, one of the CASYS organizers, working on NASA's Astrophysics Data System, insists: "Contrary to Robert Rosen's affirmation, anticipation is thus not a characteristic of living systems. Finality is implicitly embedded in any system", adding that: "Space-time incursive parabolic systems show non-local properties" and "Hyperincursive crisp systems are related to catastrophe theory". All of these features imply some sort of inanimate "decision" (that could extend Badiou's events to the non-human world ?)
What an important distinction to make- anthropomorphism versus anthropocentrism! The idea that non-human or non-living "actors" arrange the ontological terrain just as human ones do (perhaps exerting a much stronger influence than humans intuit possible) is certainly something I think Deleuze had in mind in coining 'agencement'... in fact this could count as yet another link between Deleuzian vitalism and SR.
I'm reading the Nadin article now, but I had to google it because the link was dead. Here is the link that works for me:
